About Haven

Supporting every survivor, strengthening every community, ending violence together.

Who We Are

Rooted in Advocacy, Healing & Hope

Haven is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence across the Columbia River Gorge. Founded in 1981 through a grassroots crisis line, Haven has grown into the region’s leading advocate for safety, healing, and education. We walk alongside survivors with compassion, confidentiality, and unwavering respect — empowering every individual to reclaim their voice and future.

Survivor-Centered Support - Every survivor is the expert of their own life. We honor choice, agency, and healing at every step.

Community Education - We partner with schools, systems, and neighbors to build understanding, prevent violence, and inspire change.

Equity & Accessibility - Our services are free, confidential, bilingual, and available to every person — regardless of background or identity.

What Guides Us

Our Philosophy

At Haven, we believe individual freedom from all forms of abuse and violence is a basic human right and need. We do not speak for survivors — we walk beside them. Every person’s story is unique, and so is their path to healing. Our role is not to direct, but to support, inform, and empower.

We practice an empowerment-based approach, rooted in the belief that survivors are the experts of their own lives. We provide information, resources, and advocacy — never judgment or pressure — so each person can make the decisions that are right for them.

Our Mission

Leading Change, Beyond Support

Haven’s mission is to end domestic and sexual violence by advancing survivor-led advocacy, community education, and long-term social change. We strive not only to support individuals in crisis, but to challenge the systems and beliefs that allow violence to exist.

We work to be a trusted leader and partner — conducting our work with professionalism, integrity, and a deep commitment to equality. Through prevention, policy advocacy, and collaboration, we are building a future where safety is a right, not a privilege.

Community Leadership - Partnering with local agencies, Tribal communities, and statewide networks.

Policy Advocacy - Promoting laws and practices that make violence unacceptable.

Prevention & Education - Teaching that violence is not inevitable - it is preventable.

Breaking the Cycle - Working toward lasting change for future generations.

From a Phone Line to a Lifeline

Built by Community, Grown Through Compassion

Haven began in 1981 when a small group of local residents came together with a simple but radical belief — that no one experiencing violence should ever be left without help. What started as a grassroots 24-hour crisis line, answered from kitchen tables and living rooms, has grown into the Columbia River Gorge’s leading advocacy organization for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

Rooted in community care, Haven has evolved to meet the rising needs of survivors in rural and frontier areas. Today, our advocates provide comprehensive services — from emergency shelter and legal support to prevention education in schools — while holding fast to the same purpose that started it all: safety, dignity, and hope for every survivor.

1981 — Haven founded by local volunteers with a 24-hour crisis hotline

1990s — Expansion into legal advocacy and hospital response

2000s — Launch of bilingual/bicultural services to reach underserved communities

Today — Serving 350+ survivors each year across four counties, with a commitment to end violence through advocacy, education, and prevention
